Tier 1 β€” Topic-wise Breakdown

Based on SSC CGL 2018–2024 Tier 1 analysis (25 questions, 50 marks, βˆ’0.5 per wrong):

TopicAvg QsMarksApproach
Error Spotting2–34–63-second scan: SVA β†’ tense β†’ pronoun β†’ conjunction β†’ preposition.
Sentence Improvement2–34–6Check double comparatives, Latin comparatives, gerund-only verbs, used to/be used to.
Fill in the Blanks2–34–6Read for context clue. Eliminate by grammar first, then meaning.
Cloze Test510Read the whole passage first. Use paragraph flow to predict gaps. Grammar constraints first, vocabulary second.
Reading Comprehension510Skim passage in 60s. Answer in-text questions by locating the relevant paragraph. Vocabulary-in-context: substitute each option.
Synonyms / Antonyms2–34–6Use root/prefix/suffix to eliminate. If unknown, check connotation (positive/negative) to narrow down.
One Word Substitution24Memorise high-frequency lists (government terms, phobias, -cide words, -logy words). Pattern recognition.
Idioms & Phrases24Focus on SSC-favourite idioms. Context elimination works if meaning is unknown.
Spelling / Misspelt Words1–22–4Double consonant patterns, silent letters, ie/ei. High accuracy possible with a focused list.
Para Jumbles / Rearrangement0–20–4Find the opener (no pronoun reference, no connective like 'however'). Chain linking words and pronouns.

Tier 2 Paper 2 β€” Topic-wise Breakdown

200 questions Β· 200 marks Β· 120 minutes. Time allocation is as important as strategy:

TopicAvg QsTimeStrategy
Error Recognition20–2520–25 minSVA (proximity trap), tense consistency, conjunction pairing (No Sooner/than, Hardly/when, Lest/should), pronoun case.
Sentence Improvement20–2520–25 minDouble comparatives, Latin comparatives (+to), gerund-only verbs, used to vs be used to, collective nouns, subjunctive were.
Cloze Test (2 passages)2520 minRead full passage before answering. Use paragraph theme to predict. Prepositions and articles often tested β€” use fixed collocation knowledge.
Reading Comprehension (4 passages)4035 minSkim then scan. Locate the line, not the memory. Inference questions: the answer must be supported by text, not just plausible.
Synonyms / Antonyms20–2515 minRoot-based elimination. Know common Latin/Greek roots: bene- (good), mal- (bad), omni- (all), multi-, uni-, bi-, circum-.
One Word Substitution10–1510 minMemorise by category: government (anarchy, oligarchy), science (omnivore, carnivore), people (misanthrope, philanthropist).
Idioms & Phrases10–1510 minThe SSC repeats idioms from previous years. Solve past papers to identify the high-frequency set.
Vocabulary (misc.)15–2015 minContext-clue substitution. Read the sentence with each option; the one that fits the paragraph's tone wins.

P1 β€” Master First
Error Spotting (grammar rules)Sentence ImprovementCloze Test

Highest combined marks. Grammar rules are transferable β€” learning them once helps across 3 topics. Cloze is high-volume (25 Qs in T2) and very learnable.

P2 β€” Build Steadily
Reading ComprehensionFill in the BlanksSynonyms / Antonyms

RC has high marks but requires consistent practice. Synonyms/antonyms respond well to root-word learning over 4–6 weeks.

P3 β€” Consolidate Last

The Golden Rules for SSC English

  1. 1. Never attempt a question purely by instinct β€” know your rule before marking.
  2. 2. In Error Spotting: always scan all 4 parts, even if you spot an error in Part A. Parts C and D contain the real trap.
  3. 3. In Sentence Improvement: β€œNo improvement” is correct ~20–25% of the time. Check every option before choosing it.
  4. 4. In Cloze Test: read the full passage before answering any gap. The paragraph tells you what the gap must mean.
  5. 5. In RC: the answer is always in the text, not your general knowledge. Locate the line before marking.
  6. 6. Negative marking is 0.25 in Tier 2. Any question where you can eliminate 2 options is worth attempting.
  7. 7. Past papers repeat topics. SSC CGL 2018–2024 papers are your single best preparation resource.
