SSC CGL English Strategy Guide
Topic-wise weightage, safe attempt targets, time management, and the exact topic-by-topic approach for Tier 1 and Tier 2 — built from SSC CGL 2018–2024 patterns.
Section Overview
- • 25 questions · 50 marks
- • Time: ~20–25 minutes of the 60-min paper
- • Negative marking: −0.5 per wrong answer
- • Cut-off contribution: significant (all posts)
- • English weightage: 25% of Tier 1
- • Under the current pattern, English no longer has its own standalone paper — it is merged with General Awareness into Section II of Paper 1
- • Paper 1 total: 450 marks across three sections, compulsory for all posts
- • Negative marking: −1 per wrong answer in Paper 1
- • Section II (English + GA) has its own fixed time window and cannot borrow time from other sections
- • Paper 2 (Finance & Economics) now applies only to JSO applicants, not all candidates

Verify current question counts against your notification, since English now sits inside a combined Section II with General Awareness — but the topic-priority logic (which grammar rules matter, which topics are learnable vs high-effort) still applies:

Topic Priority Framework
Highest combined marks. Grammar rules are transferable — learning them once helps across 3 topics. Cloze is high-volume (25 Qs in T2) and very learnable.
RC has high marks but requires consistent practice. Synonyms/antonyms respond well to root-word learning over 4–6 weeks.
Lower volume, manageable with focused memorisation. OWS and Idioms repeat from SSC's standard pool — past paper study is most efficient.
Tier 2 Time Management — 120 Minutes
This time-block breakdown was built for the pre-2026 standalone 120-minute English paper. Under the current combined Section II, allocate your fixed section time proportionally using the same topic order.

The Golden Rules for SSC English
- 1. Never attempt a question purely by instinct — know your rule before marking.
- 2. In Error Spotting: always scan all 4 parts, even if you spot an error in Part A. Parts C and D contain the real trap.
- 3. In Sentence Improvement: “No improvement” is correct ~20–25% of the time. Check every option before choosing it.
- 4. In Cloze Test: read the full passage before answering any gap. The paragraph tells you what the gap must mean.
- 5. In RC: the answer is always in the text, not your general knowledge. Locate the line before marking.
- 6. Negative marking is −1 per wrong answer in Tier 2 Paper 1 (check your current notification for the exact figure). Only attempt a question if you can genuinely eliminate wrong options, not on a guess.
- 7. Past papers repeat topics. SSC CGL 2018–2024 papers are your single best preparation resource.
