How to Approach OWS in Exams
Learn roots, not just words
The root 'kratos' means rule. Once you know it, you can decode any '-cracy' word: democracy, plutocracy, gerontocracy โ even ones you have never seen. Latin/Greek roots unlock 60% of advanced English vocabulary.
Learn in categories, not alphabetically
All government-system words end in '-cracy' or '-archy'. All study-of fields end in '-ology'. All fear words end in '-phobia'. Learning by category means you can narrow options immediately โ if the phrase says 'fear of', you know the answer ends in '-phobia'.
Eliminate with prefix/suffix logic
If you don't know the exact word, eliminate options using what you do know. 'Poly-' means many โ so 'polyandry' and 'polygyny' both involve multiple partners. 'Mis-' or 'miso-' means hate โ so misanthrope, misogynist, and misogamist all describe forms of hatred.
The confusable pairs are the exam's weapon
Setters deliberately put the confusable near-synonym as an option. Soliloquy vs Monologue, Polyandry vs Polygyny, Entomology vs Etymology โ these pairs appear as distractors. Study the confusables table below as its own revision unit.
