Why Are Weak Verbs Wrong?

How overusing β€˜is’, β€˜was’, β€˜are’, β€˜were’ flattens your writing

4 min read Β· Writing Style Β· IELTS / Professional Writing

The short answer

Weak verbs are forms of the verb β€œbe” β€” is, am, are, was, were, being, been. They are not grammatically wrong. But when you overuse them, your writing becomes flat and lifeless. Strong action verbs do the same job in fewer words β€” and with more energy.

Feel the difference

Read both versions. Which one feels more alive?

Weak verbs βœ—

The speech was powerful. It was an inspiration to everyone in the room. The speaker was passionate and was clearly someone who is knowledgeable.

Strong verbs βœ“

The speech inspired everyone in the room. The speaker spoke with passion and demonstrated deep knowledge.

πŸ’‘ 5 'be' verbs removed. The rewritten version is shorter and carries more energy.

Weak verbs βœ—

She is a fast runner. She is also very competitive and was always the one who is winning.

Strong verbs βœ“

She runs fast and competes fiercely. She almost always wins.

πŸ’‘ 4 'be' verbs replaced. Action verbs β€” runs, competes, wins β€” carry the meaning better.

Weak verbs βœ—

The new policy is harmful to small businesses and is a cause of unemployment.

Strong verbs βœ“

The new policy harms small businesses and causes unemployment.

πŸ’‘ Cut from 16 words to 10. Same meaning. Stronger.

Think of it like this

Imagine a sports commentator who describes everything as β€œthe ball is moving” or β€œthe player is running.” Boring. Now imagine one who says β€œhe sprints, he dribbles, he shoots β€” it flies into the net!” Same events. Completely different energy. Strong verbs are that difference in writing.

How to spot the weak verb trap

Look for this pattern in your writing:

Subject + is / was / are / were + adjective / noun phrase

Whenever you see this pattern, ask: is there an action verb that says the same thing?

She is a supporter of the cause.β†’She supports the cause.
He was the organiser of the event.β†’He organised the event.
They are in disagreement with the policy.β†’They disagree with the policy.
The report is an indication of the problem.β†’The report indicates the problem.

When β€˜be’ verbs are perfectly fine

Not every β€œis” or β€œwas” is a problem. Here are situations where β€˜be’ verbs are the right choice.

βœ“ Fine to use β€˜be’: Describing a permanent state or identity

Water is essential for life. / She is a doctor.

βœ“ Fine to use β€˜be’: Describing location

The office is on the third floor.

βœ“ Fine to use β€˜be’: Using passive voice intentionally

The report was submitted on time.

βœ“ Fine to use β€˜be’: In conditional and subjunctive forms

If I were you, I would reconsider.

βœ“ Fine to use β€˜be’: When no action verb captures the same meaning

The situation is complex. (No action verb can replace 'is' here.)

Exam tip β€” IELTS Writing Band 7+

IELTS examiners assess lexical resource and grammatical range. A paragraph with five β€œis / was” verbs shows limited range. After writing your essay, scan each sentence and ask: β€œIs there an action verb hiding inside this β€˜is’ sentence?” Replace at least 2–3 weak verbs per paragraph and your language score will improve noticeably.

πŸ€– AI writing tip

Grammarly Premium flags sentences with too many β€œbe” verbs as β€œweak writing” or β€œpassive constructions.” ChatGPT, when asked to β€œmake this more concise”, almost always replaces weak verb patterns with strong action verbs. Use this as a learning tool β€” paste your paragraph, ask β€œreplace all weak verbs with strong action verbs”, and study the changes it makes.
