The Necklace โ€” Grammar Exercises

Two grammar exercises based on real NCERT sentences from this chapter. Practise the editing and gap-filling formats tested in CBSE Section B.

Exercise 1Editing / Error Correction

The sentence below has one grammatical error. Find the incorrect word and write the correction.

Matilda and her husband works hard for ten years to repay the money they had borrowed.
Show Answer & Explanation
Errorworks
Correctionworked
RuleTense โ€” Simple Past
Explanation

'Works' is the present tense form, specifically third person singular. The sentence describes past events โ€” what Matilda and her husband did over ten years. The simple past is 'worked'. Also note: the subject is plural ('Matilda and her husband'), so even in present tense, 'work' (not 'works') would be correct. Two errors converge: wrong tense AND wrong number.

NCERT original: They dismissed their servant, changed their lodgings, and rented some rooms in an attic. She came to know the heavy work of the house.

Exercise 2Gap Filling

Choose the option that best fills the blank in the sentence below.

At the end of the story, Matilda learned that the original necklace she had borrowed was _____ all along.
A.fake
B.stolen
C.broken
D.borrowed
Show Answer & Explanation
Answerfake
RuleReading Comprehension โ€” Chapter's Climactic Twist
Explanation

The story's devastating twist is that the necklace was not real โ€” it was 'paste' (fake/imitation jewellery worth only 500 francs). Matilda had sacrificed ten years of her life to repay the debt for a worthless object. 'Fake' captures this meaning. 'Stolen', 'broken', and 'borrowed' are all incorrect โ€” the necklace was simply not genuine.
