The sentence below has one grammatical error. Find the incorrect word and write the correction.

'Encourages' is present tense; 'gave' is past tense. Both verbs describe the teacher's past actions — they must be in the same tense. The simple past is 'encouraged'. Mixing present and past tenses in the same sentence (for the same timeframe) is a tense consistency error — CBSE tests this type frequently in editing exercises.

Bishamber Nath demanded a 'dowry' of five thousand rupees before agreeing to marry Bholi — even after seeing her pockmarks at the wedding. Bholi's refusal at this moment is her act of defiance and self-respect. 'Dowry' is the specific word — a payment from the bride's family to the groom. 'Bribe', 'payment', and 'fee' are not the correct terms for this practice.
