Fog โ Grammar Exercises
Two grammar exercises based on real NCERT sentences from this chapter. Practise the editing and gap-filling formats tested in CBSE Section B.
Exercise 1Editing / Error Correction
The sentence below has one grammatical error. Find the incorrect word and write the correction.
Show Answer & Explanation
Carl Sandburg writes 'on little cat feet', not 'in'. 'On' describes the mode of movement โ the fog moves as if walking on tiny, silent paws. 'In' would mean the fog is contained inside the feet, which makes no sense. This preposition is tested precisely because 'in' and 'on' are often confused, and the poem's exact wording matters in extract questions.
Exercise 2Gap Filling
Choose the option that best fills the blank in the sentence below.
Show Answer & Explanation
Sandburg opens the poem with 'The fog comes / on little cat feet.' The verb is 'comes' โ the fog is arriving, approaching. 'Goes' would mean it's leaving; 'sits' is used later in the poem for the fog settling; 'moves' is too general. The poem's first word is 'The' and its first verb is 'comes' โ a precise detail tested in extract questions.
