The short answer
Do you feel scared when you see English? Do you feel the same fear you feel with maths? This is common. It is not because you are weak. It happens when the basics were not taught in the right way, early on. This page will not fix everything today. But it will show you one small place to start.
You Are Not the Only One
Many students in India learn English in one way. They learn to say the words out loud. Nobody explains what the words mean, at the same time.
So the words come out correctly. But the meaning does not come. This is not your fault. This happened in your school. It did not happen because of you.
As you grow older, the sentences get longer. The exams get harder. Slowly, you start to feel scared. You feel the same fear you feel with maths.
By the time you reach college, this fear is old. It has been with you for many years.
Some students still choose English Honours. They hope things will get better. But the sentences are even harder now. The fear is still there.
So you search the internet for answers. But those answers are also hard to read. You copy small pieces. You put them together. It does not sound right. This is not because you are not clever. Nobody fixed the first problem. The first problem was very early. It was about reading and meaning, together.
The Real Reason This Happens
Reading needs two things. Saying the words correctly. And understanding what the words mean.
Most schools teach the first part well. Students read out loud, again and again. But schools do not always teach the second part well. Not enough words get explained.
So a student can read smoothly. And still not understand much of it. We explain this part in more detail here.
When this gap is never fixed, it grows bigger every year. By college, it becomes hard to write, not just hard to read.
Where to Start
This will not fix everything. But it is a real place to begin.
Say one sentence about your day
Every day, say one sentence in English, out loud. Say it about something true. For example: βI ate rice today.β Or: βIt rained today.β Just one sentence. Not a paragraph. Not an essay. One true sentence, said out loud.
Read one page of a very easy book
Choose a very easy book. A children's story is good. Read only one page. Do not rush. If a word is new, do not stop. Finish the page first. One page is enough for today.
That is all for now. Two small things, not ten. When these two feel easy, you can do more. There is no need to rush.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Many students try to write a full answer first. This is too hard, right now. Build one correct sentence first. Then two sentences. The full answer comes after, not before. Do not skip this order. If you skip it, you will feel scared again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this fix my English quickly?+
No. This problem took many years to build. It will take time to change too. This page gives you one place to start. It is not a quick fix, and it will not make you feel confident in one week.
Is it too late for me? I am already in college.+
No, it is not too late. Adults can still build this skill. It may take longer than it would have in school. Starting now is still worth it.
Should I stop copying from the internet completely, right now?+
No, not suddenly. Instead, copy less each time. Try to write one small part yourself first. Slowly write more of it yourself, over weeks and months, not all at once.
Why do I know the words but not understand the exam question?+
An exam question often joins many words into one long sentence. You may know each word alone. But the full sentence asks something different. This is a common problem, not a sign that you are weak. It gets better with the same practice β reading slowly, one sentence at a time.
